What is the FSS Program?
The Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program is an initiative of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). FSS is a voluntary program for residents of the Kinston Housing Authority's Public Housing and Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Rental Assistance Programs.
The purpose of the program is to assist families in completing measurable goals in education, financial training, and job training with emphasis on improving earning potential and developing credit readiness.
Over the course of the multi-year program, FSS participants work to become financially independent of public assistance and move toward homeownership.
What services does the FSS Program provide?
FSS participants receive direction and guidance from an FSS Coordinator, dedicated to identifying goals and providing community resources to address the specific needs of each participant.
Through the FSS program, participants will:
- Improve employment opportunities and boost earning potential through education and skills training programs.
- Receive credit counseling and homeownership guidance.
- Establish an escrow (savings) account with monies awarded to the FSS participant after all goals are completed.
- Attain financial freedom from public assistance.
How do I participate in the FSS Program?
FSS participants complete a pre-enrollment form and sign a Contract of Participation. Once accepted into the FSS program, your FSS Coordinator will work with you to begin your journey to self-sufficiency.
